Hello my name is Stephen Shellabarger, president of the Webpage Publicity Agency.

Everyday we are asked, "What does it take to have my website rank at the top of the Search Engine’s results?" Lesson #1

What Does It Take To Make Your Website Rank High In The Search Engines?

       Many people build great websites, yet they never make a profit online because their website cannot be found by the general public. I wrote this Search Engine Optimization course so that the average person, businessman, or web page designer would be able to utilize and understand all the Optimization techniques that Search Engine companies use to make their client's website rank at the top of the Search Engine's results, as we do.

       Several people have told us that they have tried getting their website ranked at the top of the most popular Search Engines such as:

bullet

www.Yahoo.com

bullet

www.Altavista.com

bullet

www.HotBot.com

bullet

www.Lycos.com

bullet

www.AllTheWeb.com

bullet

www.Google.com

       No matter how many times they have tried submitting their website to the Search Engines, they never have any luck being ranked anywhere near the top of the Search Engine’s results.

       It is very important to read every part of this lesson. If you find you have made just a single mistake in your website, there is an enormous chance you will never have your website rank high in the Search Engine’s results. For example, if you only read Lesson #3 and then try to apply just what you learned from that one lesson to your personal website, there would be an overwhelming chance that you would not see any changes to your website’s ranking.

       By analogy, if your car was without gas, then it would not be able to start. Likewise, if your car was without antifreeze then your car would overheat, and if you did not have transmission fluid, then your car would not be able to shift gears.

       My point is, you need to read and follow all six lessons of this Search Engine Submission course if you expect to be ranked at the top of the Search Engine’s results.

       Now, let’s get started with Lesson #1 of the Search Engine Submission course.

Is It A Smart Idea To Submit My Website To The Search Engines "Multiple Times" To Try To Be Ranked Higher?

    Some website owners believe that submitting their website to Search Engines on a regular basis will make their website rank higher in the Search Engine’s results.

       Many people will resubmit their website on a weekly or monthly basis to ensure that the Search Engines recognize how serious they are about marketing their site online and being ranked "HIGHER" in the Search Engine's results.

       Other website owners have taken the step of resubmitting their website to the Search Engines to an extreme by resubmitting their website several times a day. These people believe this will "force" the Search Engines to recognize how serious they are about having their website rank higher in the results. This idea never worked and never will.

       Some companies even sell "Automated Search Engine Submission Software" to their customers, stating:

bullet “This program will resubmit your website on a continuous basis to all the Search Engines; making your website rank higher than your online competition’s website in the Search Engine’s results!”

       The previous statement is untrue because in reality, it does not help rank your website higher within the Search Engines. Constantly resubmitting your website to the Search Engines and over-submitting the site will cause a red flag to occur regarding your particular website. This process is known in the trade as "Spamdexing" because you are in one sense “spamming” the Search Engines trying to be “indexed” in their database. In fact, they may even take action against your website and rank your website LAST on their list of web page results or even, in some cases, DELETE it from their database.

       So, how do you know if you are submitting your website to the Search Engines too often?

       Regardless of whether you are submitting your website to the Search Engines every hour, every day, every week, every month, or even every year, unless you are telling the Search Engines that you have made changes to your website, then you are resubmitting your website to the Search Engines too often.

       Resubmitting your website to the Search Engines only helps you to ensure that they will notice you optimized your website and therefore, will take note of the changes that you made to your site.

       The Search Engines will decide how high to rank your website in their results by such things as:

bullet What websites you have "Linked" to your website

bullet The "Keywords" that are on your web page

bullet The wording of your page's "Title" and "Description"

bullet The number of times your website has been "Visited" by the general public verses the Search Engines

(These things will be discussed in greater detail in Lessons #2 – #6.)

       In order to have your website ranked "HIGH" in the Search Engine's results you will need to focus on optimizing your website correctly. Then, and only then, will the Search Engines realize that you DO have an important website that DOES deserve to be ranked at the top of their Search Engine results.

      Here at the Webpage Publicity Agency we use a software program that is known as Web Position Gold. Web Position Gold will automatically check your website and let you know the changes you need to make to your website in order for it to rank at the top of the Search Engine’s results. Web Position Gold will also automatically resubmit your website to all of the Search Engines for you by the press of a button whenever you update your website, or make changes to it. In addition, Web Position Gold will also monitor your website's ranking in the Search Engines and immediately let you know when your website is outranked by your online competition. Finally, it will inform you of what changes need to be made to your website to be ranked back at the top.

       To find out more about Web Position Gold and how it can help you rank your website at the top of the Search Engine’s results go to:

bullet www.WebpageGold.com

       In Lesson #6, we will discuss how all of the different Search Engines actually work, which ones work in conjunction with other Search Engines, and which ones you need to submit your website to first.

bullet The appropriate time to resubmit your website is when your website has "changed," not when it isn’t ranked as high in the Search Engine’s results as you want it to be!

Will My Website Rank Higher If I "Pay" The Search Engines To List My website in Their Results?

     I want to make it clear that paying to be "Listed" in the Search Engines is totally different than paying to be "Ranked" in the Search Engines.

       Some website owners are paying to list their website in Search Engine databases, instead of just submitting their website to the Search Engines for free. They think by paying the Search Engines to list their website for them, their website will be ranked much higher in the Search Engine’s results. Although this sounds believable, the Search Engines have never functioned in this manner.

       Some Search Engines do their best to make the general public think that paying them to be listed in their database will accomplish more hits, a higher ranking, or a significant increase in their over all number of sales.  However, paying to be listed in the Search Engines only means that you are paying the Search Engine to index your website in their database and nothing more.

       Paying to be listed only verifies that the Search Engines DID find your website and that they DID list your website in their database to suggest to others.  It has NO effect on how "HIGH" your website is ranked in the Search Engine’s results.

       The only advantage to paying the Search Engines to list your website in their database is that their Search Engine will revisit your website on a daily, or weekly basis (instead of a monthly basis), to see if any changes have been made to your website. This is very beneficial to you because it allows the

Search Engines to determine if you have made any changes to your website that they need to take note of on a regular reoccurring basis.

       At the Webpage Publicity Agency, we always pay for our client's websites to be listed in the Search Engines because we want the Search Engines to tell us as soon as possible if the changes we made to our client’s website got their website ranked above their online competition’s website. Simply put, we do not want to wait a month every time we update our client’s website to find out if the changes we made to their site improved their ranking results.

       Now, as for paying to be "Ranked" in Search Engines, this can mean two totally different things depending on if you are paying the "Search Engines" to rank your website, or if you are paying a "Search Engine Optimization Specialist," such as the Webpage Publicity Agency, to rank your website

       You see, paying to be "Ranked" by the Search Engines refers to paying the Search Engines to rank your website at the top of their results. In other words, a website owner would pay the Search Engine either a "Cost-Per-Click" fee (where someone clicks on your website through their Search Engine and you are billed for each click) or you are billed on a regular monthly basis to remain ranked at the top of their results. For instance, notice how I have asked Google to search for the Keyword phrase “web page hosting.”

       Also, notice the first two web pages listed in Google’s results are both in BOLD? The reason that Google does this is to show the general public that these two web page companies actually PAID Google to be ranked in the top of their Search Engine results under the keyword phrase "web page hosting." They did not EARN their way to being ranked at the top of Google’s results under "web page hosting" like “FortuneCity.com.”

       A different kind of website Ranking System is a company known as Overture.com.

       With Overture, you not only have to pay to be listed in their so-called "Search Engine", but Overture decides how high to rank your website in their Search Engine results by how much you are willing to pay them on a “cost-per-click” basis, and not how well your website was optimized for the Search Engines.

       Being billed on a “cost-per-click” fee means that no matter how many times your website is visited by the same person over and over again through Overture’s Search Engine, Overture will constantly bill you for every time the same person clicks on your website through their Search Engine’s results.

       We, at the Webpage Publicity Agency, do not recommend our clients list their website with Overture because Overture’s Search Engine usually has poor results.

       For instance, the last time I asked Overture to search for something that had to do with "Disney" their search results did not list www.Disney.com’s website as the first suggestion in their results. Instead, they listed www.Disney.com, as the 79th suggestion. The reason for this was because there were currently 78 other websites that wanted to pay a higher price to be listed under the keyword “Disney.” The businesses with the “highest advertising budget” are listed at the top of Overture’s Search Engine results instead of the websites that have the “best information” on your subject. It would be better to think of Overture as a "Pay Engine" instead of an actual “Search Engine,” as they are exactly like an online Yellow Page Directory.

       As you can see, paying to be "Listed" with the Search Engines will not help your website rank higher in the Search Engine's results and paying to be "Ranked" is not the best answer either.

       My intention of writing this course, “The Insider Secrets To Being Ranked At The Top Of The Search Engines is so you will be able to learn what it takes to optimize your website correctly-guaranteeing that it "EARNS" its way to top of the Search Engine's results without you having to spend a single penny in advertising.

bullet In Lesson #6, I will show you where to go to submit your website to the appropriate Search Engines and Directories, and in what order you need to submit your website to them

How Important Is My Web Page's "Keyword Meta Tag" When Trying To Be Ranked High In The Search Engines?

     When it comes to having a high ranking in the Search Engines, your web page’s “Keyword Meta Tags” are one of the oldest tricks in the book.

       Your web page’s Keyword Meta Tags used to be the “key” to having a good ranking in the Search Engine’s results. However, today they play just a marginal factor in your website’s ranking.

       In fact, 99% of all of the major Search Engines are now ignoring your Keyword Meta Tag altogether and paying no attention to them at all.

       The reason most of the Search Engines no longer read your web page’s Keyword Meta Tags is because some time ago practically everyone was trying to cram in as many keywords as they possibly could. The Search Engines would refer to this as “Spamdexing” and then either pay no attention to the web page’s Keyword Meta Tag or often rank that particular web page LAST in their list of Search Engine results. Again, "Spamdexing" is SPAMMING the Search Engines trying to be INDEXED under as many different keywords as possible which have nothing to do with your website.

       For example, below you can see what I am referring to by Spamdexing the Search Engines with too many words in your Keyword Meta Tag that have to do with “dogs.”

bullet <META name="KEYWORDS" content="dog pile, dog breed, bull dog, dog name, dog picture, snoop dog, dog breeders, dog training, English bull dog, small dog, American bull dog, dog for sale, dog health, hot dog, boxer dog, picture of dog, dog house, dog food, breed of dog, big dog, nate dog, dog bed"> .... etc.

       Search Engines are designed to find SPECIFICALLY what the general public asks them to search for. They are not designed to find the web pages that have the broadest description and the most keywords within their Keywords Meta Tag.

       No one can be a professional Auto Mechanic, while being a professional Auto Dealer, a professional Auto Safety Engineer, a professional Auto Stereo person, and a professional Auto Designer. A professional is noted for their one or two specific talents. The same is true with your website and your web page's Keyword Meta Tag. You do not want to focus on every single keyword phrase that you can possibly think of that relates to your website. Instead you want to focus on what your website specializes in and the keywords that your customers are using to find your website on the internet.

       It would be silly for us, at the Webpage Publicity Agency, to try and have our website ranked #1 in the Search Engines under every single word that had to do with “Marketing.” It would also be ridiculous for us to try and be ranked at the top of the Search Engines under every single word that had to do with “Web Page.” This would be a bad idea because 99% of the general public on the internet that asked the Search Engine to search for “Marketing” or “Web Page” would be looking for other things that had to do with “Marketing” or “Web Pages,” and that did NOT relate to “Web Page Marketing.”

       My point is, you need to define exactly what your web page is about by using the keyword phrases that the general public is asking the Search Engines to search for when they are looking for your online business. Then focus on using every form of that Keyword Marketing Phrase within your web page in order to be ranked high in the Search Engines.

      When we are optimizing a clients website for them and preparing to rank it high in the Search Engines, we always use a program known as Click Tracks to help us find the most appropriate Keyword Marketing Phrase for their website.

       Click Tracks not only tells you what keywords the general public asked the Search Engines to search for when they found your website, but Click Tracks also tells you what pages within your website the public went to first and how long they stayed on each web page.

       Click Tracks will also tell you how many customers came to your site from each individual Search Engine and if any of the Cost-Per-Slick Search Engines were actually effective for your online business financially or not.

       Click Tracks will even keep track of all of your online banner advertising on other people’s websites telling you which sites are bringing in the most traffic to your online business.

       To find out more about Click Tracks and how it can help you find the most operate Keyword Marketing Phrase for your online business go to:

bullet In Lesson #3, we will discuss how to find the most appropriate Keyword Marketing Phrase for your online business and how to use it within your website to be ranked at the top of the Search Engines.

Are "Doorway Pages" The Best Way To Rank My Website Higher In The Search Engine's Results?

     There is a lot of controversy over "Doorway
Pages
" and what they actually are.

       Some people refer to them as "Bridge Pages," "Portal Pages," "Jump Pages," "Gateway Pages," "Entry Pages," and several other types of "Page" names.

       Regardless of what they are called, a “Doorway Page” is a web page that is specifically made to work in conjunction with the Search Engines to help them rank your website much higher in their results.

       Doorway Pages are most often used by Search Engine Optimization Specialists as a “quick fix” to get their client’s website ranked up at the top of the Search Engine’s results instead of taking the time to optimize their client’s website correctly.

       A Doorway Page will most often be a web page without any frames, scripting, or coding of any type. It is usually just a plain, clean cut web page with maybe one graphic. For example, it may have your company’s logo for identification purposes along with a link down at the bottom that says something like “To enter our website Click Here;” as shown in the example below.

       Notice how the web page above is very clean cut and has one graphic at the top with some very simple text for the Search Engines to read. The important feature is the hyperlink down at the bottom of the web page that reads <Click To Enter>

       It is assumed because Doorway Pages are simple for the Search Engines to read, being clean cut with hardly any graphics or complicated HTML coding, they allow your website to be ranked at the top of the Search Engine’s results. However, this is not the best way to get your website ranked at the TOP of the Search Engine’s results.

       There are several disadvantages to having Doorway Pages built for your website. The first important one is if your Doorway Pages are ever deleted from the Internet or taken down by the person that built them for you -- you will instantly loose your high ranking in the Search Engine’s results.

       Another disadvantage to Doorway Pages is they have absolutely no value to the general public. Therefore, the general public will never want to link to them, read them, or tell other people about them.

       A Doorway Page is just another web page that is standing in the way by preventing your customers from being able to easily access your website and find out what your online business is all about. Frequently, I send clients to websites that have Doorway Pages. After visiting the website, they E-mail me stating how they went to that website but did not see anything on the website except a little bit of text, and that was all. In other words, all they saw was the Doorway Page and nothing else.

       Having a Doorway Page is like having a major-chain retailer leave all of their products in their shipping boxes instead of unpacking them and displaying them on their shelves. If this were the case, the public would be discouraged having to open each shipping box to search for the merchandise they wanted to purchase.

       Doorway Pages can be an annoyance to your online customers and put a bad image on your online business. Instead of building a Doorway Page to your website, it would be much more effective to correctly optimize your website.

       I have debated with many webmasters on the issue of “Jump Pages,” a type of Doorway Page that uses JavaScript and causes the page to instantly “jump” or “redirect” a visitor to the official web page of a particular website.

       The most serious problem with Jump Pages is that the Search Engines hate them and will not list Jump Pages within their Search Engine results.

       The Search Engines will not list Jump Pages in their Search Engine’s results because they have learned that many people try to trick the Search Engines into believing that their web page is about something that it is not; for example, a pornographic website disguised as a computer business.

       As you can see, there are many problems in using a Doorway Page in an attempt to have your website rank at the top of the Search Engine’s results. By correctly optimizing your website from the beginning you can avoid the many pitfalls of a Doorway Page.

bullet Starting in Lesson #2, we will discuss all that you need to do to your website in order to be ranked at the top of the Search Engine’s results.

Will Adding "JavaScript" To My Website Make My Website Rank Higher In The Search Engine's Results?

     Amazingly, many webmasters think that a professional looking website, one with special effects and JavaScript coding built into it, will make their website rank higher in the Search Engine's results. This also applies to websites that have such features as:

bullet

An image zooming in from the side, top, or
bottom of the screen

bullet

Having your mouse leave sparkles behind it
as you drag it across the screen

bullet

Having little advertisements that stay on the screen as your scroll up and down reading the web page

bullet

Fading from one page to another .... plus many other types of similar effects.

       The reason websites with these special effects using JavaScript will have trouble being ranked "HIGH" in the Search Engine’s results is because the Search Engines CANNOT read a web page that is full of JavaScript! The Search Engines read a web page by the “HTML” coding that the web page is composed of and not the “JavaScript” coding or how cool it looks.

       In fact, if you build your web page using a lot of JavaScript, most Search Engines will not even record your website in their Search Engine’s database.

       I often tell students in my Search Engine Optimization classes that:

bullet

The Search Engines love web pages that are full of JavaScript as much as a swarm of wasps or hornets would love to live in a nest that full of RAID Wasp & Hornet Killer!! (In other words, they hate it.)

       Take a look at the example below of what JavaScript language looks like. I have copied and pasted some JavaScript coding that is used for making a Time Clock appear on a website.

function clock() {
if (!document.layers && !document.all) return;
var digital = new Date();
var hours = digital.getHours();
var minutes = digital.getMinutes();
var seconds = digital.getSeconds();
var amOrPm = "AM";
if (hours > 11) amOrPm = "PM";
if (hours > 12) hours = hours - 12;
if (hours == 0) hours = 12;
if (minutes <= 9) minutes = "0" + minutes;
if (seconds <= 9) seconds = "0" + seconds;
dispTime = hours + ":" + minutes + ":" + seconds + " " + amOrPm;
if (document.layers) {
document.layers.pendule.document.write(dispTime);
document.layers.pendule.document.close();
}
else
if (document.all)
pendule.innerHTML = dispTime;
setTimeout("clock()", 1000);

       Even though a time clock would have nothing at all to do with the information or products that you would be selling on your website, the same thing applies to any website that is made up of JavaScript coding. It would be made up of coding

that is full of different commands and prompts that would make it virtually impossible for us to read the HTML coding.

       Therefore, if your website is built out of JavaScript, instead of HTML coding, then the Search Engines are NEVER going to rank your website high in their results. The general public never asks the Search Engines to search for things in JavaScript Language. Instead, they ask the Search Engines to search for things using the every day English language of which HTML coding is made up. There are some forms of JavaScript that make great selling tools on your website such as a countdown time clock, for example: 3 Sale Days Left -until your sale ends, or when your website prompts the visitor to sign up for your newsletter, or download a free trial version of a software program. In those situations, I encourage our clients to use JavaScript in their website. The goal should be to sell products or services; not only to be ranked high in the Search Engine’s results.

       However, when it is necessary to add JavaScript (or special coding of some type) to your website, then it is best to be sure that your JavaScript is hidden from the Search Engines. To accomplish this just add the following:

<!-- ... symbol at the beginning of your JavaScript coding (right above your JavaScript coding) and then the ... //--> ... symbol at the end of your JavaScript coding (right below your last source of JavaScript coding) as in the example below.

bullet

 <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!--
your JavaScript coding goes here and will then be hidden from all Search Engines
//-->

</SCRIPT>

       By adding this JavaScript "cover-up" feature to your web page’s HTML coding, you will make the Search Engines bypass your JavaScript coding. Now, just because you can hide your JavaScript coding from the Search Engines does not mean that you can use this “cover-up” feature through out your entire website and expect to be ranked at the top of the results. The Search Engines want to find out what your website is really about by not only reading your website’s Title, Description, and Keywords, but also the general text.

       If you built your entire website out of JavaScript, then used the “cover-up” feature to cover it all up, the Search Engines would have nothing to read about within your website. It is more important to build your website strictly out of HTML coding instead of adding special features made of JavaScript coding.

Will My Website Be Easier For The Search Engines To Find If I Build My Site Using "Macromedia Flash"?

    Many of our clients paid their webmaster several thousands of dollars to build them a professional website out of Macromedia Flash which looks ten times more professional then their online competition’s website. Yet for some reason, they can not get their website ranked anywhere near the top of the Search Engines results. Other people have come to us stating that they could not get their Macromedia Flash website listed in the Search Engines AT ALL. The Search Engines cannot read a Flash presentation like we can. A Flash presentation is like an online movie that is made up of vector images similar to a cartoon animation.

       Search Engines only read TEXT within the HTML coding that makes up your website, instead of pictures or images. No matter how professional your Macromedia Flash presentation, the Search Engines will never be able to read your website.

       To have a better understanding of what I am referring to by building your website out of Macromedia Flash, go to:

bullet

www.Balthaser.com

       Be prepared to sit back and relax for a few minutes as you wait for it to load. Using a 56K modem, it may take over 5 minutes to load!

       Because balthaser.com is nothing more than an online Flash presentation, there is no general text for the Search Engines to read within their website except for their Title, Description, and Keyword Meta Tags (found within their HTML coding). This makes it almost impossible for the Search Engines to rank balthaser.com high in their results.

       To prove my point, try this little experiment: try highlighting the text on their web page with your mouse or try holding down the ... Control... key on your computer's keyboard and then hit the ... A ... key on your computer's keyboard (this will "select all").

       Did you notice there was nothing on the screen to select like there is on a regular web page?

       We L@@K at the text with our eyes, but the Search Engines can only READ the text from within your web page’s HTML coding.

       Now let us try a different experiment. Try going to www.WebpagePublicity.com and highlighting the graphics of our web page with your computer’s mouse (or hold down the... Control... key on your computer's keyboard and then hit the ... A ...).

       Did you notice how there were actually graphics to select on the screen this time?

       If you cannot highlight the text on the screen with your mouse, that means the Search Engines cannot read the text on the screen either. This is what you will experience when your website is built entirely of Macromedia Flash.

       Another drawback to building your website out of Macromedia Flash is that if your customers do not have the Macromedia Flash Plug-In downloaded to their computer, they will NEVER be able to see what your website is about. The problem with this is not everyone has the Flash Plug-In on their computer and not everyone is going to go through the trouble of downloading the plug-in, especially if they have never seen your website before.

       By building your website out of Macromedia Flash, it generally takes a LONG time for the Flash presentation to load. Normal websites load in three to five seconds over a 56K modem, but Macromedia Flash presentations can take anywhere from thirty seconds for small files to five minutes or more for larger files to load.  No one likes to wait a long time for a web page to load, especially when they have no idea what your website is about.

       For instance, my experience was that my friend told me to go to Balthaser.com; I thought that my computer browser had locked up on me. I tried closing the program down and then re-accessing Balthaser’s website all over again. After I had gone back to Balthaser’s website three times, and it still was not loading for me, I finally decided to shut down and restart my computer. I then tried re-accessing Balthaser’s website all over again, but it still did not load. Finally, because it was a flash presentation, I figured it might be in the process of loading, so I sat back and waited. After 28 seconds, over our DSL Internet access, Balthaser FX’s website finally loaded for me. The only reason I went through so much trouble to find out what Balthaser.com was really about was because my friend asked me to go there. Normally, I would never wait that long for a website to load. So remember, if your website takes longer to load than the general website, that could mean the general public may never find out about your online business.

       I am not saying that you should never put a movie or a Flash presentation in your website because there is definitely power in a sales presentation video. But, your online business’ information should be separate from your Flash Presentation. You should give the general public the option of reading what your online business is about OR watching an online Flash presentation about your online business.

bullet The beauty of a Flash Presentation is how it can be used to “Show” instead of “Tell,” but the Search Engines have to be “Told” instead of “Shown.”

Will My Website Rank Higher If I Build My Website So You Do Not Have To "Scroll Up And Down"

    You will not believe how many people think that it is important to make their website so it does NOT “Scroll Up & Down” in order to have a good ranking in the Search Engine’s results.

       Scrolling has absolutely nothing to do with being ranked in the Search Engine’s results or having more sales.

       Most people think that if a viewer has to scroll up and down he or she will not take the time to read what you have to say on your website. But, as for scrolling up and down, that is exactly what people are used to doing on the web.

       Some webmasters believe having a short one page sales letter, which the general public does not have to scroll up and down, is the best way to sell your products or services. However, the general public is looking for DETAILS and INFORMATION about your online business; therefore they want to read everything that relates to your online business. Selling your products or service on the internet is totally different than selling your products or services through Bulk Mail, TV, or Radio commercials. People are searching for specific information about the products or services that you can potentially offer on your website. Therefore, a long detailed sales letter is more beneficial than a short simple sales letter for selling your products or services.

       TV and Bulk Mail advertising only reaches 1 - 2 percent of potential sales. When the general public finds your website, it is usually a result of their searching for that type of website and having an immediate need for your product or service. You want your website to contain detailed information on your product or service; and an explanation of how it will satisfy their wants or needs.

       Creating a "no scroll" website would not only contain very little information, but it could also drop your rankings in the Search Engines. This is because the Search Engines not only look at your website’s Title, Description, and Keyword Tags but they also look for good content on your web pages, just like everyone else. “Bad” or "low-quality" websites may have all the right keywords in their web page's Meta Tags, but do not have good content in them and Search Engines use this in their ranking standards.

       By providing a good source of rich information on your website, it will naturally make the general public want to read your website, link to your website, tell their friends about your website, and revisit your website. This will help your site rank much higher in the Search Engine’s results because your site will receive many more hits and many more links than your online competition’s site. Also, it is important to provide some sort of valuable information that relates to the products or services that your online business offers. All of these things will help your site rank much higher in the Search Engine’s results.

bullet In Lesson #4, we will discuss what it takes to write good keyword text and good content on your web page in order to encourage others to link to your website and revisit your website.

Will It Make My Website Easier For The Search Engines To Find If I build My Website Out Of "Frames"?

    Many webmasters are “neat freaks.” They prefer to build their website out of frames, so each part of their website has its own little spot, which they believe will make their website rank higher in the Search Engine’s results. And, if this is what you believe, I hate to say it, but "YOU” have been framed!

       Building your website out of “Frames” could make your website easier for the “general public” to read and navigate through, but it makes it nearly impossible for the “Search Engines” to read and navigate through. This means that the Search Engines may NEVER rank your website high in their results.

      The following picture is an example from my very first website which was designed using frames. My goal for using this technique was to give my site a more professional look.

       Notice, there is a top frame to the website, a left frame to the website, and then the main frame to the website (the section that contains all of the text about myself). The problem with building your website in this manner is that even though this may look like ONE website to us, the Search Engines view it as THREE individual web pages that are all three linked together to make it appear as ONE website. This is a problem because whenever the Search Engines find your website and read what your website has to say, they will only see the TOP frame of your website and nothing else.

       The top Frame of your website is going to be the home page of your website which will be identified as:

bullet

www.YourDomainName.com

       The second frame of your website is generally listed as something like:

bullet

www.YourDomainName.com/page2.html

       The third frame is generally listed something like:

bullet

www.YourDomainName.com/page3.html

       There is only a slight chance that once the Search Engines find the first frame of your website they will see the link to the second frame within your website. Then, within the second frame they might see the link to the third frame of your website. However, there is a 95% chance that the Search Engines will not list your website in their results. This is because there will be nothing valuable within the first Frame of your website for the Search Engines to index.

       The Search Engines prefer to find good, rich, text within the HTML coding within the home page of your website (www.YourDomainName.com), instead of having to crawl to a second or third frame within your web page before they find out what your website is really about. For this reason, when I built my very first website out of frames, I could never be listed anywhere within the first ten pages of the Search Engine’s results.

       In addition, if the Search Engines DID find the 2nd or 3rd frame of your website, the frame that contains all of the information about your online business, then usually it is the only frame that the Search Engines will index in their database. The following is an example of this.

       Notice how the TOP frame and the LEFT side frame of my website are now gone. The Search Engines did not see a need to index those frames in their database because there was no valuable information within those first two frames for indexing. This is why the Search Engines only indexed the 3rd frame of my website resulting in the general public no longer being able to navigate through my website because the navigation buttons within the left frame were gone.

       Of course there are ways to put special HTML coding into the frames of your website so that the Search Engines know they need to continue to the next frame of your website in order to read what your website is about. But if you use this technique, you are still making it much harder for the Search Engines to find your website on the internet and index it in their database. That is why whenever we are designing a website for one of our clients at the Webpage Publicity Agency, we always build their website out of Tables, Columns, and/or Rows instead of using frames.

       A website made up of Tables, Columns, and/or Rows will L@@K exactly the same as a website that is built out of Frames, except for the fact that your entire site will now scroll up and down instead of just one frame within the site scrolling up and down.

       Because Tables, Columns, and Rows do not effect your web page’s HTML language, the Search Engines will now be able to easily read what your website is about and easily rank your website much higher in their Search Engine’s results.

Is It A Good Idea To "Cloak" My Website So I Can Be Ranked Higher In The Search Engine's Results?

     Web page "Cloaking" is a special Search Engine "Identification Code" that is placed into your web page's HTML coding. Using “cloaking” the Search Engines visit your website and are automatically redirected to a different web page (one that is full of keyword phrases), rather than the web page that the general public finds listed in the results.

       The whole purpose behind web page cloaking used to be to prevent the general public from stealing your web page’s HTML coding, then using it in their own website. This allowed them to have their website ranked at the top of the Search Engines, just like you did. Instead of Cloaking their website to keep people from stealing their HTML coding, they were Cloaking their website to try and have their website ranked at the top of the Search Engine’s results using the most general and most popular Keyword Marketing Phrases. This is why the Search Engines started reading ALL of the text on the web pages instead of reading only the text that is located in the Cloaked web page. Search Engines do this as their way of finding out EXACTLY what that web page is about before they list that website in their results. We at the Webpage Publicity Agency do not recommend Cloaking, or provide it to our clients, because it has become so outdated and many people have abused it.

       Search Engines are not looking to send the general public on a wild goose chase by listing web pages that have absolutely nothing at all to do with their search. Instead, they are looking to suggest the most popular web pages that have the best content and are specifically targeted toward what the general public asked the Search Engines to find. If a Search Engine catches you Spamdexing, making them view a totally different Cloaked web page than your official web page, this could lead to a Search Engine never listing your website again.

       Take Google for example. They not only list the web page’s “Description” in their results (#1), but they also have a small section of actual text from the front page of that website (#2) to display to the general public in their results.

The general public can now see EXACTLY what a web page is really about before deciding whether or not to visit the site.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In Lesson #4, we will discuss why the 1st suggestion in Google’s results above (www.math.arizona.edu) does not have an actual “Description” listed with it, yet the 2nd suggestion within Google’s description does.

       If you insist on using web page Cloaking with your website, to keep other people from stealing your HTML coding be careful to not make the web page that the Search Engines read be much different from the web page that the public reads.

       Take a look at what some of the top Search Engine Executives had to say about a Cloaked website being listed in their Search Engine’s database:

Doug Cutting - Senior Architect for Excite.com:

  • "We don't like Doorway Pages or Cloaked web pages. That is the simple answer."

Jan Pederson - Director of Spidering for Infoseek.com:

  • "We despise Cloaked web pages because most often times the submitter is attempting to subvert our ranking system."

Paul Gautheir - Technology Officer for Inktomi.com:

  • "Our technology is the most sophisticated when it comes to Cloaking and keeping spammers from abusing our system."

Larry Page - Chief Executive Officer of Google.com:

  • "Letting people get to the information they are interested in, by typing only a few words, is very hard and it's very important to us which is why we ignore Cloaked web pages."

Is It True That Having More Keywords Within My Website's "Title" Will Rank My Site Higher In The Search Engines?

      The more Keywords you put within your web page’s Title does not always help your website rank higher within the Search Engine’s results because certain Search Engines will only read a certain number of characters within your web page’s Title. Notice how I stated "characters" and not "words." That includes all spaces, punctuation marks, symbols, and numbers, along with each individual letter.

        Below is an example of a web page’s Title:

       Notice when I went to www.Broken-Arrow.com, the text at the top of my internet browser reads:

bullet

Custom Screen T Shirt Printing and Embroidery on Garments. Quotes

This is the “Title” of that website. Also, notice that in the example of Google’s Search Engine’s results (as shown below), Google copies the text of Broken-Arrow.com’s Title to use as the link with their Search Engine to
Broken-Arrow.com’s website.

       Because your website’s Title is the first source of English Text about your online business found within your web page (as shown below), and is the only source of text that is listed in BOTH the Search Engine’s results as well as on your website, it is very important to word your web page’s Title in the correct manner.

       I have helped a few clients that had two or three pages full of text about their online business all embedded into their HTML Title tag of their website. They made this mistake not knowing that the most characters a Search Engine will read within your web page’s Title is 150 characters. Some Search Engines will only read a maximum of 60 Characters within your Title, but the average number of Characters a Search Engine will read is 70 characters.

       Keep in mind when writing your web page’s Title there is more to it than just picking words off your website to place in the first 70 characters of your Title. Your web page’s Title must be compelling to the general public as well as the Search Engines. Therefore, you should concentrate on putting the Keyword Marketing Phrase that best describes your website within the first 70 characters of your web page's Title. Then you may add an additional 80 characters to your Title, because some Search Engines will read the full 150 characters of your Title.

bullet

In Lesson #3, we will discuss how to choose the best Keyword Marketing Phrase for your website that will help your website rank at the top of the Search Engine’s results.

Having More "Links" To My Website Will Rank My Site Higher In The Search Engine's Results. True Or False?

    It is true that the more web pages you have “Linked” to your website the higher your website will be ranked, but only to a certain degree.

       First, let me tell you about the concept of Link Popularity. Link Popularity was made famous by Larry Page, the co-founder of Google.com, and he should be acknowledged for his innovative idea of using Link Popularity to rank all of the web pages within Google’s results.

       Link Popularity is Google’s way of asking the general public which web page they personally feel should be ranked the highest in Google’s results under that particular keyword phrase.

       The following is a brief description how Link Popularity actually works:

bullet

The general public asks the Search Engines to search for websites that have to do with what they are looking for on the web

bullet

The Search Engines then instantly search their whole entire database of web pages for anything and everything that has to do with what that person asked them to search for

bullet

The Search Engines then organize all of those web page that they found by the number of other web pages that are linked to each of those web pages

bullet

The web page with the most links will be placed in the Number One (#1) spot, within their Search Engine’s results

bullet

Then the web page with the next highest number of web pages linked to their website would be listed as Number Two (#2) and so on and so forth.

       Now, you might be thinking to yourself:

Okay Stephen, I will just create multiple web pages under my own Domain Name and have them all link to my homepage. That is how I will get a high "Link Popularity” score and have my website rank at the top of the Search Engine’s results…

       Well, I hate to tell you this, but it’s not that easy. The thought above will never work because all of the web pages that are pointing to the homepage of your website would all be listed under the same Domain Name.

       L@@K at the example below:

bullet

www.YourDomainName.com/page1.html

bullet

www.YourDomainName.com/page2.html

bullet

www.YourDomainName.com/page3.html

bullet

www.YourDomainName.com/page4.html

bullet

www.YourDomainName.com/page5.html .... etc.

       Therefore, the Search Engines would NOT count all those web pages as actual links to your website.

       Now, you might be thinking:

“Okay then, I will purchase several Domain Names and have them all lead straight to my website so that I can have multiple links to my website and get a higher Link Popularity score than my online competition."

       At first, this may sound like a good idea, but this will not work either. The Domain Names that you have linked to your website would be ONLY Domain Names, and not actual websites.

       The Search Engines search for actual WEBSITES found under a different Domain Name and count them as actual LINKS to your website. They do not count ONLY Domain Names, either Forwarded or Masked, as an actual link.

       And now… you might be thinking to yourself…

"Okay then, I will just purchase several Domain Names and hook them up with a free web page hosting service, then I will have all of them link to my main website in order to be ranked higher than my online competition."

       Sorry, once again it is not that easy because all of the websites that you build would be hosted by the same web page hosting company. This would mean that if you had 23 websites and 22 of them linked to your official website, the Search Engines would read all 22 of those websites (linked to your website) as just "one" link to your website because all 22 of them would be hosted by the same web page hosting company.

       For example, if you had 32 links to your website on the internet, and 10 of them were hosted by AngleFire.com, 10 others were hosted by AOL.com, and the remaining 12 were hosted by EarthLink.com, the Search Engines would look at all 32 of those links as only 3 links to your website, and not 32 links. Actually, the 32 links are all hosted under 3 individual web page hosting companies, not 32 different web page hosting companies.

       So now… you might be thinking…

"If this is the case, I will call several web page hosting companies from around the country and have each one of them host one of my websites. This way, the Search Engines will look at all of my websites as actual links to my main website and give me a higher Link Popularity score than my online competition.

       Once again, it is not that easy. When Search Engines give your website a Link Popularity score to decide how high to rank your website in their Search Engine results, they do not just look at the QUANTITY of web pages that you have linked to your website. Instead, they look at the QUALITY of the web pages linked to your website. In other words, if you are trying get a higher ranking in the Search Engines than your online competition and your online competition had 100 Links to their website, you could not simply create a higher Link Popularity Score by creating 101 links to your website. Most likely, the 100 Links that your competition has linked to their website would all have different levels of value to them depending on how many other websites those websites had linked to their website. The 101 Links that you created for your website would have no Links to them, therefore the Search Engines would not place any value on those web pages that you linked to your website.

       Now finally… you might be thinking to yourself…

"Well, I am just going to add an affiliate program to my website so that the general public will WANT to link to my website (and get paid for it!) and this will eventually give me a higher Link Popularity score then my online competition has in just a short time."

       Again, this is not so easy because the Search Engines do not count an “Affiliate” or “Associate” link as an actual link to your website.

       The identification coding that comes after your Domain Name, that is your client’s affiliate tracking code that you assign to your online affiliates, tells the Search Engines that the general public linked to your website in order to make a profit, and not necessarily because they found your website to be a valuable source of information. Therefore, the Search Engines do not count an “Affiliate” or an “Associate” link as an actual link to your website.

       There are two ways to have a higher Link Popularity Score than your online competition. The first way is to create more value to your website than your online competition has to their website; and the second way is to personally contact a bunch of other websites and ask them if they would be willing to link to your website. For this reason, Link Popularity is so important to your website when it comes to being ranked high in the Search Engine’s results, especially considering it is out of your control.

       The general public’s job is to grade how valuable your website actually is and how high your website should be ranked in the Search Engine’s results by deciding for themselves if they have the desire to link to your website.

    At the Webpage Publicity Agency we personally help our clients get their website ranked at the top of the Search Engines results. We not only create something of value on their website that will make the general public want to link to their website - verses their competition’s website, but we also use a program that is called Arelis.

       Arelis is designed to search the internet for you and automatically find other websites that would like to link to your website for free. This will help you immediately start to have a higher Link Popularity score than your online competitors.

       Arelis will also find all of the web pages that are linked to your online competition’s website and send a personalized email to each one of them stating that you found their website linked to www.YourCompetitionsWebsite.com and you would like to find out if they would find your site interesting to link to also.

       We have seen client’s websites that had great Titles, Descriptions, and good Keyword Phrases in their General Text, but had no other web pages Linked to their website. This prevented them from ranking higher in the Search Engine’s results. Once we created a valuable source of information on their website, then ran their website through Arelis, within a few short days they had more links to their website than their online competitors. We made their website rank well above their online competition’s website in the Search Engine’s results by using this simple strategy.

       If you would like to find out more about Arelis and how it can help you make your website rank at the top of the Search Engine’s results then just go to:

In Lesson #5 we will discuss what the difference between a Low, Medium, and High quality link is and how to out rank your online competition in the Search Engines by getting more High Quality links to your website

Is It Really Necessary To "Submit" My Website To All Of The Thousands Of Search Engines On The Internet?

     How many times have you seen an online marketing company advertise that they can submit your website to thousands of Search Engines for you and bring thousands of customers to your online business?

       It always surprises me how many people actually believe a website's ranking is based on the number of “SUBMITS” to the Search Engines. Because of this misconception, so many people are purchasing the Search Engine submission software programs thinking that the more Search Engines they submit their website to, the higher their website will be ranked resulting in more customers. This HAS never and WILL never be the way Search Engines actually work. Software companies that advertise their software can automatically do all of the submission work for you (“While you sit back and watch the orders come rolling in”) are not telling you everything that you need to know.

       It is true that Search Engine submission programs will automatically submit your website to hundreds, even thousands, of different Search Engines; but just because you are being LISTED with thousands of Search Engines does not mean that you are going to be RANKED near the top of any of them. You also have to ask yourself

bullet

What Search Engines are these website submission programs listing my website with?

       Obviously, they are not listing your website under:

bullet

www.Yahoo.com, as Yahoo is a Directory that charges you on an annual basis to be listed with them.

bullet

www.Altavista.com, as Altavista requires you to type-in a hidden code that appears on your screen (that a software program can not read) in order to have your website listed with them.

bullet

www.Google.com, as Google.com penalizes web pages that are submitted directly to them through an automated software submission program.

       If the main Search Engines do not allow web page submission software programs to work in conjunction with them, then what Search Engines would the web page submission program be listing your website under? Obviously, not the most important ones!

       My point is, you never want to buy an automated web page submission program and expect it to automatically make your website rank at the top of the most popular Search Engines, as that will NEVER happen.

       Your website’s ranking depends on how well you optimized your website by the keywords you used within your web page’s Title, Description, and General Text, along with how many QUALITY web pages are linked to your website on the internet.

       The only way that a Search Engine submission program can benefit your online business would be if you had already optimized your website correctly and then, resubmitting it to the Search Engines. Lastly, careful monitoring of your site’s ranking is essential to keeping it up at the top of the Search Engine’s rankings.

     The benefit YOU will get from using Web Position Gold, is it can automatically resubmit your websites to hundreds of Search Engines for you, once you have optimized your site. Web Position Gold also allows you to constantly monitor your website to make sure that your website STAYS ranked at the top of the Search Engine’s results where it belongs.

       Web Position Gold will also automatically tell you when your website has been outranked by your online competition and what you need to do to your website in order to have it ranked back up at the top of the Search Engine's results.

       In addition, Web Position Gold will resubmit your website to all of the Search Engines automatically once you have re-optimized your website. This way, you never have to worry about resubmitting your website to all of the Search Engines.
